SAW pipe specifications

The specifications of submerged arc welded straight seam steel pipes (SAW pipes) are usually specified by the following standards:

Standard

Scope of application

API 5L

For oil and gas pipelines, it specifies the nominal diameter, wall thickness, material grade (such as X42, X52, etc.) and testing requirements of the pipe.

ASTM A252

For welded steel pipes used for supporting piles, it specifies the dimensions and tolerances.

EN 10219

European standard for hollow steel pipes for cold-formed structures, including dimensions and material properties.

GB/T 9711

Chinese standard for oil and gas transmission systems, covering dimensions, tolerances and material properties.

JIS G3479

Japanese standard for welded steel pipes for pipelines.

Common specification parameters:

Nominal diameter (ND): from a few inches to a few meters

Wall thickness (WT): from a few millimeters to tens of millimeters

Length: usually 6 meters, 9 meters, 12 meters, or customized according to needs
