Application Markets and Product Advantages of Corrugated Steel Culvert Pipes

Corrugated steel culvert pipes—also known as corrugated metal culverts or corrugated steel pipe culverts—are structures formed by rolling corrugated metal sheets or assembling corrugated steel plates into a corrugated tube. They are primarily installed beneath highways and railways to serve as culverts, underpasses, small bridges, drainage pipelines, and support structures for mine tunnel walls. Typically manufactured from hot-rolled steel plates such as Q235 or SS400, these products feature wall thicknesses ranging from 2 to 8 mm and diameters between 0.5 and 12 meters. Available in various cross-sectional shapes—including circular, elliptical, arched, and horseshoe—they serve as alternatives to traditional circular pipe culverts, slab culverts, and small bridges, finding widespread application in highways, railways, municipal engineering, mining, and general infrastructure construction.

Regarding manufacturing and anti-corrosion treatment, steel corrugated culvert pipes are typically produced using standardized factory processes; small-diameter pipes utilize flange connections, while large-diameter pipes employ assembled connections, with lengths customizable up to approximately 6 meters based on project requirements. Following fabrication, the products generally undergo hot-dip galvanizing—resulting in an average coating thickness exceeding 84 μm—and receive a secondary anti-corrosion coating of asphalt upon delivery to the construction site. Durable rubber sealing rings or strips are commonly used as sealing materials. To meet the specifications of various countries and regions for export projects, the products can be manufactured in accordance with relevant international standards, such as ASTM A760 and AASHTO M190.

Compared to concrete culverts, corrugated steel culvert pipes offer significant advantages. Their unique corrugated structure effectively distributes axial and radial load stresses and provides high compressive strength; industry data indicates that their pressure-bearing capacity can exceed that of same-diameter concrete pipes by more than fifteenfold. Additionally, corrugated steel pipes are lightweight—weighing only one-tenth to one-fifth as much as their concrete counterparts—making them easy to transport and install; they can even be moved manually in areas where mechanical transport is difficult or impossible. Installation requires neither heavy machinery nor complex foundation work and curing, thereby significantly shortening construction schedules and reducing costs. For instance, the c

onstruction cost for a 2-meter diameter corrugated steel pipe is approximately 80% of that for a concrete pipe; for a 6-meter diameter pipe, the cost is about 70% of that for a concrete bridge culvert, with a construction time saving of roughly 50%.

In terms of market applications, corrugated steel culverts are suitable for a wide range of projects, including conduits, culverts, and seepage wells for highways, railways, and waterways; load-bearing structures for temporary and permanent bridges; urban drainage, stormwater, and sewage pipelines; underground utility installations and utility tunnels; the renovation and reinforcement of small bridges and culverts; and retaining wall support in mines and tunnels. They effectively address challenges such as uneven foundation settlement, complex geological and topographical conditions, and difficulties in material transport. They are particularly well-suited for use in high-altitude permafrost regions, areas with soft soil subgrades, and zones with deep fill, helping to prevent the "step-offset" effect at culvert crossings—thereby improving driving comfort and safety. Furthermore, the use of corrugated steel culverts reduces the consumption of conventional construction materials like cement, sand, aggregate, and timber, offering significant benefits for resource conservation and environmental protection.
